Seasonal Plumbing Checklist

A few small checks each season can prevent weekend emergencies. Use this list as a starting point for your home.

Spring and summer

  • Test outdoor faucets and look for drips at hose bibs
  • Clear debris from yard drains before heavy rain
  • Check under sinks for moisture after long appliance cycles
  • Flush rarely used drains with water to keep traps sealed

Fall and winter

  • Insulate exposed pipes in garages, crawl spaces, and attics
  • Know where your main shutoff valve is before a freeze
  • Drain and store hoses; shut off and bleed outdoor spigots
  • Listen for running toilets or unexplained water meter movement

Year-round habits

Keep grease out of kitchen drains, avoid flushing wipes, and call early when you notice odor, slow drainage, or pressure changes.

Regular attention is simpler—and usually less expensive—than emergency repair after a break or backup.
